DIY Mirror Lighting

Mirror, mirror, on the wall… who’s the brightest of them all? Mirrors, depending on their size and style, can benefit from a variety of lighting options. Let’s take a look as some different ways in which LED lighting can be used to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of mirrors around the home! Backlighting Adding a back-light to a mirror creates a soft diffused glow that helps to draw the eye, and acts as the perfect source of indirect illumination when the mirror is in use. Because the light remains ambient, this type of installation method is best for decorative applications. Often, depending…

Tips for Accent Lighting with LEDs

A beautiful home, like a great work of art, is more than just the sum of its parts. It is the careful attention to detail, the balance of grandeur and subtlety, which evokes a sense of awe or inspiration from onlookers. LED accent lighting is one of those elements of home décor with the ability to elevate the everyday into something truly memorable. While it may not be the first thing you notice when you walk in, a few carefully selected ambient lights can have a significant impact on the overall feel of a room, accentuating certain design or architectural…

Is It Up To Code? Dimmable LED Systems

At Inspired LED, we’ve been in the business long enough to have learned a thing or two about building and electrical codes. And over the years, we’ve seen some of the many creative ways that people have attempted to cut corners, or “hack” their lighting systems, using everything from soldering irons to spare lamp cords… But before we get on to the big infractions, let’s start by reviewing the correct way to lay out a dimmable LED system. Conventional Installs: Up to Code Generally speaking, low voltage LEDs can be powered in one of two ways. The simplest set-ups utilize a low voltage plug-in power supply combined…

Flex into Fixtures: Taking LEDs to the Next Level

Flexible LED strips first came onto the market as energy efficient solution for accent lighting, particularly in kitchens. A low-profile design made them easy to hide away under cabinets, counter tops, or shelves, while the robust nature of the flex made the use of traditional lenses unnecessary in most applications. This meant reduced material costs which helped LED flex strips to become one of the most affordable lighting options available. For the past several years these so-called “bare flex” installations have grown in popularity, allowing the average consumer to achieve the look of high-end lighting for less. But as increased competition…

Inspired LED Sets the Stage: ASU Gammage

A Brief History- Home to performances great and small, from local concerts to touring Broadway shows, the iconic ASU Gammage theater has been a cornerstone of Phoenician culture for more than half a century. It began back in 1957 as the dream of then Arizona State University President, Grady Gammage, who commissioned his close friend and famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright to assist with the design. Together they envisioned a grand coliseum-like structure with two pedestrian bridges extending on either side to welcome visitors. It took years of planning and construction, but in 1964 the 3,000-seat theater opened its doors to a performance…

Spring Cleaning Challenge: Welcoming Warmer Weather with LEDs

While friends, relatives, and readers in the Midwest or East Coast may be quick to laugh at the idea, even those of us here in Arizona have anxiously been awaiting the return of spring. Emerging from the long weeks of a (somewhat) frozen winter makes us want to shake of the dust, throw open the windows and welcome the warm weather back into our homes. For many people, including myself, there is little better way to kick off the season than with a thorough bout of spring cleaning. But despite the gratification of having a squeaky clean home, I’d be willing…

Where to Add Toe-Kick Lighting Around Your Home

LED lighting can be used in a variety of locations around the home, although it is perhaps most commonly used under kitchen cabinets. This application provides a functional light for cooking, while also adding stylistic appeal. But in addition to bright task lighting, LED’s also provide a convenient solution for more subtle (yet equally important) accent lighting. Installing LED lighting above cabinets and along shelves, behind televisions or pieces of art, even in ceiling coves, can do wonders to improve the styling of a room! One of our very favorite accent lighting applications is also one which is commonly overlooked despite its advantages- toe-kicks!…
